Incorporated since 2004, Melem USA is a member of the Better Business Bureau of Northern Colorado and Wyoming.
Melem USA imports, distributes, and sells on the internet. and handles only one brand: Melem (skin and lip balms) . Our product is the original Zagrebacka Melem manufactured for many years in Zagreb, Croatia. MelemUSA has been working with the inventor , later Neva, the manufacturer, and now with its distributor Atlantic Grupa since 2004 (www.melem.com) It began selling through Amazon in 2013. The history of Melem USA's relationship with the inventor and founder of Melem goes back to the years before World War II.
The inventor, developer, and founder of Melem Ninko Niksic, passed away July 17, 2009. He is survived by his wife Vlasta and a sister. They were like a family to us. How we came to import and distribute Melem in the US is a matter of a small world. Our family was engaged in helping the Croatian Children's Hospital with supplies and money through our involvement with Rotary International soon after the end of the Balkan Wars in 1996.Dr.Muftic (an ob-gyn, who immigrated from Croatia to the US in 1961) was interviewed on Croatian TV on our trip to Zagreb. Ninko caught the broadcast and contacted us via the Zagreb Rotary Club and asked if Dr. M was indeed the same one who lived across the street in Zagreb before World War II. Yes...and old playmates were united. Between the days in Zagreb, World War II and the Communist regime caused Ninko and Vlasta to relocate in Australia, where Ninko, a chemical engineer, invented Melem and began manufacturing it. About 30 years ago, as the Communist regime permitted more private sector manufacturing, Ninko and Vlasta returned to Zagreb, where he marketed Melem under the name of Zagrebacka Melem. It became a standard product carried by pharmacies and used in the hospitals.
Dr. M's wife Felicia, an American with extensive experience in consumer affairs and regulatory rules and regulations, State and Federal, tried out Melem on herself and discovered it was the only product that had ever stopped mosquito bite itches. She then began using Melem as a makeup base and then found it was very effective on grandchildren's diaper rashes. The rest is history Dr. Muftic met Felicia when she was a junior year abroad student from Northwestern University in Berlin, Germany in 1958. They were married 54 years.
Dr. Muftic passed away August 14, 2015. The Muftic family, with Felicia as CEO, continues with the Melem business. Dr. Muftic was recently honored by the Colorado Medical Society for his 50 years in medical practice. His internship took place in the US (under John Madden, President of the US College of Surgeons at St Clare's Hospital in New York City) He graduated from medical school with both an MD and a PhD from the University of Basel (Switzerland) with his teacher and mentor, Rudolf Nissen. Residency in OB Gyn was at Rose Hospital in Denver. The Nissen fundoplication, a surgical procedure for the treatment ofgastroesophageal reflux disease, is named after him. Nissen completed the first pneumonectomy by a Western physician in 1931.
